What are the causes of Giddiness?

  • Giddiness occurs when something disrupts your sense of balance. A steady flow of information from your ears, eyes, tissues, and central nervous system is required for a stable sense of balance. Your central nervous system processes this information to help your body maintain equilibrium.
  • When there is a disruption in the flow, the central nervous system may incorrectly process the information, leading to feelings of instability and Giddiness.
  • Common causes include anxiety, stress, and motion sickness. Breathing in carbon monoxide or becoming severely dehydrated can lead to Giddiness, too. Low blood sugar due to improper diet or specific medications, especially for blood pressure, can also make you feel dizzy.
  • Inner ear problems like benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) make you feel like you're spinning when you move your head. Infections or inflammation in the inner ear, like labyrinthitis or vestibular neuritis, can also trigger Giddiness. Conditions like anaemia, acoustic neuroma (noncancerous ear tumours), concussion, and certain neurological diseases affect balance and cause Giddiness.
  • Sudden drops in blood pressure, cardiomyopathy (heart muscle thickening), heart attacks, arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats), circulation problems, intense exercise, and heat exhaustion are a few other causes.

What are the symptoms of Giddiness?

People having giddiness may experience various sensations, such as:

  • Lightheadedness or faintness
  • A false sense of spinning or motion
  • Feeling nauseous
  • Feeling unsteady or loss of balance
  • Feeling of floating
  • Feeling disoriented or confused

These feelings become worse while walking, standing up or moving your head. Sometimes, your Giddiness is accompanied by nausea, vomiting, or fainting, or it may be so sudden or severe that you need to sit or lie down. The episodes can last a short time, just a few seconds, or even days, and might recur. If you have these symptoms for extended periods, seek emergency medical help or contact Skedoc; we have listed top doctors for Giddiness treatment in Hyderabad.

Frequently Asked Questions
Treatment for giddiness depends on the underlying cause. For example, the doctor will treat the infection if you're dizzy because of an inner ear infection. If certain medicines make you dizzy, the doctor may advise you to limit your activities until your body gets used to the medication.
Yes, prescription medicines, such as antihistamines, anticholinergics, and anti-anxiety medications, can immediately relieve Giddiness, vertigo, and nausea. But, these medications may cause drowsiness. Preventive medicines for migraines also help in reducing Giddiness. The effectiveness of medications may vary based on the cause and individual response.
If you are experiencing giddiness, one way to manage it is to lie down until the sensation subsides. When you try to get up, do it slowly and cautiously to prevent any further episodes of giddiness.
Physical therapy and exercises help to alleviate giddiness symptoms. Your physical therapist will examine the cause of your Giddiness and assess your risk of falling. They will create a personalized treatment plan based on your medical evaluation and your goals for recovery. Treatment may include exercises to improve balance, stabilize vision during head movements, and boost overall physical health.
Giddiness and dizziness are sometimes used interchangeably to describe a sense of instability or lightheadedness, Including falling, fainting, or perceiving that you or your surroundings are spinning or in motion.
