D and C
D & C also known as Dilatation and Curettage is an outpatient medical procedure that is done to both diagnose gynecological problems as well as treat some of them. In a D & C procedure tissue is removed from the inside of the uterus using an instrument called curette, after first dilating the lower portion of the uterus known as the cervix. The conditions which a D & C procedure can help diagnose include uterine polyps, uterine cancer, and precancerous endometrial cell changes which present with symptoms of abnormal bleeding, bleeding after menopause, and abnormal pap smear results. A D & C procedure can be done to treat conditions such as noncancerous uterine and cervical growths, ectopic pregnancy, remains of a pregnancy after a miscarriage or abortion, and reduce heavy bleeding after a delivery.
