Frequently asked questions

The best doctors for cold and flu treatment in Hyderabad describe it as an upper respiratory tract infection that is caused by various viruses such as rhinovirus, adenovirus, coronavirus, influenza virus, etc.

Cold and flu specialists explain that the common cold and flu are spread when an individual comes in contact with infected respiratory droplets that are expelled when an infected person breathes, coughs, laughs, or speaks. The virus can also be transmitted when a person touches an object contaminated with the virus and then touches their eyes, nose, or mouth.

The origin of the term cold for the common cold is believed to come from the belief that the symptoms are similar to that when exposed to cold weather, and the term flu comes from the name of the virus that causes it namely the influenza virus.

Most cases of cold and flu do not require any medications for treatment, as they are self-limiting and resolve without intervention. Medications to alleviate symptoms can include nasal decongestants, pain relievers, or analgesics.

The best way to prevent colds and flu is to maintain good hand hygiene, avoid touching eyes, nose, face, and mouth when outside, avoid being in close contact with people who have a cold or flu, maintain social distancing, use face masks when being in crowded places or public places, eating a healthy diet, getting regular exercise, and maintaining good immunity.

Flus and colds usually don’t require any specific medical treatment, and they resolve in 3-10 days. It is advisable to get enough rest, drink plenty of fluids, breathe humidified air, drink warm fluids, and take medications such as decongestants and analgesics for symptomatic relief. It is advisable to get a medical consultation with an ENT specialist if the symptoms are getting worse or there is a high fever.

In general, a majority of cold and flu cases resolve with self-care and rest in 3-10 days. It is however advisable to seek medical attention if the symptoms are severe, accompanied by other symptoms such as high fever, dizziness, severe headaches, or skin rash, or if the symptoms are not subsiding even after 10 days.

The symptoms of cold and flu include :

  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Itching of the nose and eyes
  • And mild fever.

These symptoms can last between 3 - 10 days and are managed with rest and self-care.
