Cholecystitis
Cholecystitis is a condition that is seen when there is an inflammation within the gallbladder. The gallbladder is a small organ present beneath the liver and its main function is to store bile juice and release it into the small intestine to help with digestion. Cholecystitis presents with symptoms that include excruciating pain in the upper right side of the abdomen, pain when the abdomen is touched, fever, nausea and vomiting. Cholecystitis results when there is a blockage to the outflow of the bile juice which may be due to the presence of gallbladder stones, tumors, a blockage of the bile duct, and severe chronic illnesses including AIDS. Treatment by gastroenterologists includes medications and in some cases surgical procedures if required.
