Carotid Angiogram :
Carotid arteries are large blood vessels present in the neck that carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the brain.
An angiogram is an x-ray of the inside of the blood vessels. A carotid angiogram is a procedure done to study the inside of the carotid arteries. It is performed to diagnose problems in the carotid arteries such as atherosclerosis (build-up of plaque) and narrowing of the carotid arteries, also called as carotid stenosis.
Some of the symptoms that may prompt your doctor to perform carotid angiogram include dizziness, confusion, or stroke.
If the carotid angiogram shows narrowing of the arteries, some of the treatment methods used include, angioplasty, and placement of a stent.
Before the procedure is performed, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any x-ray dye, sea food, and items that contain iodine. Also, inform your doctor if you have any kidney problem that you are aware of. If you are taking any blood thinning medications, you will be asked to stop the same about 3 to 7 days before the procedure.
After the procedure, you may be kept under observation at the hospital for a period of 24 hours or more.
