What are the causes of Brain Stroke?

A brain stroke, also called a brain attack, is a condition caused due to blockage in blood supply to the part of the brain or caused due to burst in blood vessels. The causes of brain stroke include-

  1. Chronic alcoholic patient
  2. High blood pressure
  3. Diabetes
  4. Obesity
  5. Physical inactivity
  6. Family history of Stroke
  7. Cardiovascular diseases
  8. Atrial fibrillation
  9. Irregular heart rhythm

What are the types of Brain Strokes?

There are three types of brain strokes. They include:

  1. Hemorrhagic Stroke: It is a condition with a leak or rupture of blood vessels
  2. Ischemic Stroke: The condition is typically the result of a blood clot that obstructs or fills a blood vessel in the brain.
  3. Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA): TIA is a condition that is caused due to temporary decrease in blood supply to the brain. Hence the symptoms usually last for a shorter duration.

Frequently asked questions

The signs & symptoms of brain stroke include- difficulty talking, paralysis or numbness of the face, arms, and legs, headache, difficulty walking, sudden confusion, and sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.

The diagnosis of brain stroke can be made during a physical examination where the doctor will examine the patient thoroughly, investigational scans- which include a CT scan of the brain, MRI of the brain, carotid ultrasound, cerebral angiogram, echocardiogram, and blood tests.

The treatment plan for brain stroke depends upon various factors, including the patient's age, the type of stroke the patient is diagnosed with, and overall condition. The treatment plan includes- emergency iv medications, Thrombolysis if required, emergency endovascular surgery, removing the clot with stent retrievers, carotid endarterectomy, and endovascular embolization.

Since the exact cause of brain stroke is unknown, we cannot prevent it entirely. However, there are a few measures that can help in minimizing the risk of brain stroke. They include- maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, controlling high blood pressure, lowering cholesterol in the diet, avoiding smoking, avoiding illegal drugs, etc.
