Atherosclerosis occurs due to the deposit of fatty plaques within the arteries and this is caused by high BP, diabetes, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, smoking, obesity, insulin resistance, and inflammatory conditions such as lupus, arthritis, etc.
The best treatment for atherosclerosis depends on the severity of the condition, and in early stages medications such as statins, anti-coagulants, blood pressure lowering medications are used, and in later stages procedures such as angioplasty & stenting, endarterectomy, fibrinolytic therapy, and bypass grafting may be needed.
The main stages of atherosclerosis include:
When an individual has atherosclerosis, fatty deposits begin to form in the arteries, and when the fatty deposits grow big and tear away from the blood vessel wall, it causes bleeding and clot formation, that blocks the flow of blood within the arteries.
