Frequently asked questions

Atherosclerosis occurs due to the deposit of fatty plaques within the arteries and this is caused by high BP, diabetes, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, smoking, obesity, insulin resistance, and inflammatory conditions such as lupus, arthritis, etc.

The best treatment for atherosclerosis depends on the severity of the condition, and in early stages medications such as statins, anti-coagulants, blood pressure lowering medications are used, and in later stages procedures such as angioplasty & stenting, endarterectomy, fibrinolytic therapy, and bypass grafting may be needed.

The main stages of atherosclerosis include:

  • The initial formation of the fatty deposit
  • Change of fatty deposit into atheroma or plaque formation and
  • Rupture of the plaque and formation of a blood clot.

When an individual has atherosclerosis, fatty deposits begin to form in the arteries, and when the fatty deposits grow big and tear away from the blood vessel wall, it causes bleeding and clot formation, that blocks the flow of blood within the arteries.

Early diagnosis and proper management of atherosclerosis can help to prevent complications and medical emergencies caused by the condition, and help individuals with the problem live a long and active life.

The risk factors for atherosclerosis include uncontrolled blood pressure and diabetes, obesity and overweight, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy diet, sleep apnea, etc.

Atherosclerosis does not resolve completely, but lifestyle changes and medications can help to slow the progress of the condition and prevent complications.

The symptoms of atherosclerosis are usually absent in early and mild stages. As atherosclerosis advances symptoms related to the organ will present such as:

  • Heart - chest pain
  • Kidneys - high blood pressure
  • Limbs - pain with movement
  • Brain - stroke etc.
