Alopecia can also be called hair loss or baldness. Alopecia can be described as an autoimmune disease that causes severe hair loss and bald patches over the body and scalp. Alopecia will mainly affect the hair on the scalp. There are several types of alopecia, which include alopecia areata totalis, diffuse alopecia areata, alopecia areata universalis, and ophiasis alopecia areata. The alopecia can occur due to various causes such as genetic reasons, hormonal changes, radiation therapy, medications, hair styling and treatments. The symptoms that can be experienced when there is alopecia includes patches of hair loss over scalp, body hair, eyebrows, eyelashes, and facial hair, pitting of nails, itching, loss of hair, redness, swelling, and broken hair. There are risk factors that can lead to the risk of alopecia, such as age, stress, weight loss, lupus, poor nutrition, family history of baldness, and diabetes. Alopecia can be diagnosed through diagnostic tests such as blood tests, scalp biopsy, pull tests, and light microscopy. Management of alopecia can be made through medications, transplantation of hair, and laser therapy.
