what is Pleural Effusion?
There are thin membranes that cover your lungs. These are called as pleura and in pleural effusion, there is fluid build up in between lungs and this layer. This can be due to pneumonia, congestive heart failure, poor circulation of blood due to loss of liver function, pulmonary embolism cases where there is an actual blockage in the lung arteries, after open-heart surgery, or in lung cancer cases. It is necessary to treat and address pleural effusion as soon as possible as this causes undue pressure on the lungs causing further complications. A needle or a small tube for drainage can be inserted into the chest to drain the fluid in severe cases. In most cases, antibiotics can be applied till the infection is addressed and the fluid is drained. In recurrent infections of the lungs, a drug can be injected that causes the two layers of the pleura to stick together preventing further accumulation of the fluids.
