what is lipoma?
Lipoma is a fatty accumulation of cells under the skin that generally occurs on the back, arms, neck and shoulders. A physical examination or in some cases a biopsy may be required to diagnose lipomas. Lipoma does not need any treatment as it does not spread or cause pain. But for cosmetic enhancement lipomas can be surgically removed. A steroid shot can be given if there is a small lipoma or under local anesthesia, liposuction can be performed to remove the fat cells. A complete removal of the lump can be done surgically where an incision is placed under local anesthesia. The tissue is separated from healthy tissue and extracted. Cosmetic sutures are placed afterwards. The chances of recurrence when lipomas are completely removed are lower as compared to other treatment options.
