An electrocardiogram (also called EKG or ECG) is a diagnostic procedure that involves measuring and recording the heart's electrical activity. It is performed to check the rhythm of the heartbeat and diagnose problems with the heartbeat. An EKG may be performed while the patient is lying down or moving, with the latter performed as a stress test.
A cardiologist may order an EKG when they suspect problems such as arrhythmia, coronary artery disease, heart attack or a variety of other heart problems. The symptoms that warrant an EKG include chest pain, shortness of breath, tiredness, dizziness, fainting and fast heartbeat. The procedure begins with a healthcare provider sticking 12 electrodes on the skin of the arms, chest and legs. Then, when the test begins, the EKG equipment captures and records the heartbeat.
