A gastroenterologist is a super specialty medical doctor with rigorous training and clinical skills in the department of Gastroenterology. They are academically proficient with qualifications such as MBBS (Bachelor or Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery), MD (Doctor of Medicine) in General Medicine and DM (Doctorate of Medicine) or DNB (Diplomate of National Board) in Gastroenterology. They may additionally pursue certifications in sub specialties such as Hepatology.
They evaluate and treat several conditions affecting gastrointestinal health such as gastritis, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, stomach/peptic ulcers, liver abscess, cirrhosis, organomegaly, irritable bowel syndrome, benign and malignant tumors of gastrointestinal tract, rectal bleeding, colon polyps, gallbladder issues, biliary duct disorders, and other similar conditions. A gastroenterologist conducts thorough diagnostic investigations with advanced procedure such as endoscopy.
