Hyperthyroidism :
Hyperthyroidism, also termed as overactive thyroid, is characterized by increased production of thyroid hormone by the thyroid gland. The presenting complaints of hyperthyroidism include increased sweating, shakiness, feeling anxious or nervous, unexplained weight loss, rapid heart rate, increased frequency of bowel movements or diarrhea, hair loss or brittle hair, difficulty in sleeping, menstrual period changes, swelling and enlargement of the neck and swelling or bulging of the eyes. The medical conditions causing hyperthyroidism include Grave's disease, thyroid nodules, thyroiditis, consumption of excessive amounts of iodine and TSH-releasing pituitary adenoma or thyrotropinoma. Hyperthyroidism is diagnosed by conducting various tests such as thyroid blood tests, thyroid antibody blood test and imaging tests like radioactive iodine uptake test and a thyroid ultrasound. The treatment methods of managing hyperthyroidism involve taking antithyroid medications, radioactive iodine therapy, beta blockers, and a surgical procedure called thyroidectomy.
