High cholesterol :
High cholesterol is the presence of cholesterol in more than the normal range in the blood. It is otherwise called hyperlipidemia or hypercholesterolemia. There are two types of cholesterol: good cholesterol (HDL), which helps remove the excess amount of cholesterol from the blood and bad cholesterol (LDL), which builds up in the arteries and can lead to conditions like heart disease and stroke. The major conditions that lead to high cholesterol are smoking, stress, obesity, kidney disease, liver diseases, alcohol usage, a sedentary lifestyle, and an unhealthy diet. High cholesterol levels do not show any symptoms but lead to complications like chest pain, stroke, diabetes, hypertension, and CAD. It can be diagnosed through lipid function tests. Treatment plans for high cholesterol include medical management along with lifestyle and dietary modifications. Early detection and intervention by a physician help improve the management and prevention of further complications to the patient.
