Pulmonary edema :
Pulmonary edema is the accumulation of fluid in the lungs. This abnormal fluid accumulates in the air sacs of the lungs and leads to difficulty in breathing. The symptoms and causes of pulmonary edema can be categorized into sudden and chronic symptoms. The sudden symptoms are breathing difficulty, cough with sputum, anxiety, irregular heartbeat, wheezing and cold clammy skin. The chronic (long-term) symptoms are fatigue, sitting up at the night with cough or breathlessness, severe shortness of breath, fatigue, drastic weight gain, cough worsening, feet and leg swelling, difficulty in breathing, and wheezing. The causes of pulmonary edema can be due to heart failure, and non-cardiogenic causes are kidney failure, trauma, and pneumonia, high altitude, etc. The diagnostic tests done are chest X-ray, arterial blood gas test, CT scan, pulse oximetry, ECG, echocardiogram, coronary angiogram, ultrasound of the lungs and other blood tests. The treatment options of pulmonary edema depend on the severity of the condition such as medications, oxygen therapy, and ventilators in severe cases.
