Polyhydramnios :
The excess quantity of amniotic fluid present around the featus is known as polyhydramnios. It is seen in pregnant women after 16 weeks of pregnancy. Patients present with symptoms like abdominal discomfort, tightness in the stomach, shortness of breath, constipation, difficulty in passing stools, and swelling of feet and hands. The exact cause for polyhydramnios is unknown, whereas a few causes include different Rh factors, carrying identical twins, and underlying diseases like uncontrolled blood sugars. Some of the tools and diagnostic tests to detect polyhydramnios are ultrasound, fundal height, measuring amniotic fluid index, maximum vertical pocket, fetal echocardiogram, glucose challenge test, and amniocentesis. Treatment includes drainage of amniotic fluid and inducing labor before the due date. Complications that might occur if the patient has polyhydramnios include placental abruption, postpartum hemorrhage, stillbirth, and umbilical cord prolapse. Control of blood sugars is the only precaution that one should take during pregnancy.
