Dyspareunia :
Painful sexual intercourse is called dyspareunia. It can be both in men and women. In women, pain can be felt in the lower abdomen, pelvic floor, or uterus, whereas in males, it can be felt on the penis or in the testicles. Depending upon the location of the pain, it can be classified into entry-pain, where a patient might experience pain at the entry level, positional pain, where a patient can feel it in the pelvic muscles, and deep pain, where the patient might feel it during deep penetrations. Women with menopause might experience this more due to the decrease in estrogen levels. Symptoms of dyspareunia include pain in the bladder, cramps in the pelvis, pain after intercourse, and pain during penetration. Some of the common reasons why dyspareunia occurs are underlying diseases like endometriosis, chronic urinary tract infections, pelvic floor dysfunction, irritable bowel syndrome, trauma and infections like vaginal infection. Diagnosis is done by pelvic exam, ultrasound, and rectal examination. Treatment includes physical therapy and topical estrogens.
