Corneal Ulcer :
Corneal Ulcer refers to an open sore on the corneal part of the eye and has to be treated immediately. The common signs of corneal ulcers are red or bloodshot eyes, watery or teary eyes, pain in the eye, foreign object sensation in the eye, light sensitivity, blurred vision, inflamed or swollen eyelids, and white or gray spots on the cornea. The infectious causes of corneal ulcers are bacteria, viruses, and parasites. The other non-infectious conditions leading to corneal ulcers are eye injuries like burns, corneal abrasions and cuts, lagophthalmos, dry eyes, toxic effects due to any medications, and due to the malfunctioning of the immune system. Corneal Ulcers are treated by giving medications to treat the cause, relieving pain and other symptoms, wearing bandage contact lenses, tarsorrhaphy, and lastly, surgery. If untreated, corneal ulcers complicate to astigmatism, cataracts, endophthalmitis, glaucoma, perforated cornea, recurrent corneal erosions and vision loss.
