Hepatologist :
A hepatologist is a medical practitioner who diagnoses and treats the diseases of the liver and biliary duct. To become a hepatologist, one should pursue a bachelor's degree in medicine, followed by a master's degree in medicine, followed by a super specialization in gastroenterology, and then a fellowship or a diploma program in hepatology, which might take another one to two years. A hepatologist plays a crucial role as he is the bridge between the patient and the liver transplant surgeon. Diseases that a hepatologist treats include viral hepatitis, autoimmune hepatitis, end-stage liver disease, chronic liver failure, bile duct cancer, and cholestasis. Hepatologists play an important role during post-transplant period as they monitor the requirement of immunosuppressants required to the patient. A hepatologist can also be a pediatric hepatologist who takes care of the liver in young children and infants. Hepatologists mostly advise basic blood investigations, which might include liver function tests, and imaging studies such as ultrasound, CT and MRI.
