It is a progressive disease that is caused by abnormality in the eyes drainage system which causes fluid build up leading to excessive pressure. Vision is lost gradually which starts in the edges of the visual field and slowly impacting the central vision. Risk factors include race (high in people of african descent), older age, family history , diabetic retinopathy, ocular trauma, certain medications, prolonged use of corticosteriods etc,. There are diffent types of glaucoma open angle galaucoma (most common), Angle-closure glaucoma (less common), Normal-tension glaucoma (rare form in which optic nerve is damaged despite being normotensive). Symptoms include redness in the eye, vision loss, eye pain, mid-dilated pupil, nausea may be present. Glaucoma is usually picked up during routine eye test. It can be diagnosed using Tonometry (measures intraocular pressure), testing for optic nerve damage, visual field test, gonioscopy etc,. Management of glaucoma includes lowering of intraocular pressure with eye drops, oral medications, laser treatment or a combination of approaches to treat the specific case.
