Whipples Surgery :
Whipple surgery is a procedure that is done to remove tumours from the pancreas. The procedure involves the removal or reconstruction of large portions of the gastrointestinal tract. The procedure is only done if the tumour is present in the head of the pancreas and cancer has not spread to other parts. Besides removing the head of the pancreas, the duodenum, the gallbladder and a portion of the stomach are removed in this procedure. Some of the lymph nodes that surround the pancreas are also removed. The remaining pancreas and the rest of the digestive system are then reconnected. The procedure takes around six hours. Most patients stay in the hospital for at least a week after a Whipple surgery. Patients also need to make some permanent changes in their diet after this surgery. It can take the patient up to a year to feel normal.
