The troponin test looks for two forms of proteins related to the heart: troponin I and troponin II. It helps in speeding up the process of diagnosing heart attack. Troponin is a protein, complex molecule found in certain muscles in body. It usually circulates freely in the bloodstream, but any damage to the muscle cells can cause troponin to escape the blood. Troponin tests are usually done to rule out heart attack. Troponin levels are usually increased in conditions like chronic kidney disease, congestive heart failure, pulmonary embolism, heart valve disease, heart surgery, sepsis, irregular heart rhythms, exercising strenuously, and extreme emotional strain. It is performed in hospital emergency rooms when doctors suspect a recent heart attack. There are no side effects from this test, but a small bruise may be seen within a few days.
