Thrombophlebitis :
Thrombophlebitis refers to veins just beneath the skin and is usually less serious. Deep vein thrombosis (DVTs) occur in deeper veins and are generally considered more dangerous because the clot may break loose, travel to the lungs, and block blood flow through vital parts of the lungs, leading to a pulmonary embolism that potentially can be life threatening. Depending upon the formation of a clot in the vein, they are listed as Deep vein thrombosis, superficial thrombophlebitis, superficial thrombophlebitis, migratory thrombophlebitis, and septic thrombophlebitis. Thrombophlebitis is most commonly a result of several precipitating factors, especially being immobile for extended periods of time, for example, in prolonged surgery, lack of movement, which is seen in long commercial flights, varicose veins, injury, or trauma to the vein. Symptoms include swelling, pain, discoloration, and a feeling of warmth. Medication or combinations of medications such as pain relievers, anticoagulants, or sometimes compression stockings are the main treatments. In extreme cases, surgical intervention to evacuate the clot may be necessary.
