Thalassemia :
Thalassemia is a blood disorder that affects the production of hemoglobin, which is produced by red blood cells. Hemoglobin is the protein in the red blood cells that carries oxygen to the other parts of the body. In thalassemia, red blood cells are destroyed in large numbers, leading to anemia. There are two different types of thalassemia such as alpha thalassemia and beta thalassemia. The symptoms of thalassemia are weakness, fatigue, delayed growth, yellowish discoloration of the skin, shortness of breath, and deformities in the bones of the face. The severe symptoms such as loss of appetite, dark coloured urine, etc. Thalassemia is seen in children in the first 2 years of age. The doctor recommends some tests such as blood tests like complete blood count, DNA analysis, hemoglobin electrophoresis, prenatal testing, etc. The treatment for thalassemia can be a transfusion of blood, bone marrow transplant, folic acid supplements, chelation therapy, healthy diet and exercise.
