Swine flu is a viral infection caused by H1N1 virus that mainly effects the respiratory system. There was a global pandemic of swine flu during the time between 2009-2010. The swine flu spreads from person to person by inhalation of droplets of saliva,sneezing, contaminated objects of the an infected person etc. The signs and symptoms resemble that of a flu like cough , cold, fever (with or without rash), runny nose, fatigue, weakness, body pains, diarrhea, vomiting and sore throat etc. It can be diagnosed by medical history, physical examination, symptoms, RT-PCR, rapid influenza diagnostic tests and chest X-ray. Management is mainly conservative treatment like taking plenty of oral fluids,hydration , rest, symptomatic management and antivirals if necessary. Annual flu vaccination is necessary in high risk individuals like elderly people above the age of 60 years.
