Salivary Gland Cancer :
Salivary gland cancer is a malignant tumor that affects the salivary glands. These tumors mainly occur in major salivary glands such as parotid glands, submandibular glands and sublingual glands. It is more likely to develop in older people, people who smoke and consume alcohol frequently, people who received radiation therapy to head and neck and people in occupations like plumbing, rubber products, leatherwork and asbestos. Symptoms include weakness, numbness in face, jaw, mouth and neck, persistent pain in face, mouth and jaw, difficulty opening in mouth, bleeding from the mouth and trouble swallowing. Diagnosis is made by thorough physical examination by checking lumps in the salivary glands and tests include CT scan, magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography and biopsy. Treatment includes surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy and radiosensitizers. Complications include rapid enlargement, mass around mouth, numbness, weakness and facial pain.
