Pterygium :
Pterygium refers to a non-cancerous growth of a tissue that begins in the corner of the eye, on the conjunctiva, and grows towards the iris. It is pinkish or whitish in color and is triangular in shape. It occurs due to long-term exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) light and chronic irritation from hot and dry weather, wind, and dust. There is an increase in the incidence of pterygium in people above sixty years old, those with vitamin A deficiency, and those who are affected by human papillomavirus. The symptoms of pterygium are inflammation, swelling of the eye, which are characteristic of conjunctivitis, redness in the eye, dry eye, watery eye, a feeling like there is something in the eye, eye itching, eye pain and eye burning causing excessive production of tears. It is treated by prescribing medicated eye drops and permanently by eye surgery.
