Peripheral Angioplasty :
Peripheral angioplasty is a procedure done to open up the narrowed or blocked arteries (blood vessels) that supply blood to the legs. The narrowing or blocking of arteries occurs due to the accumulation of plaque. Complete blockage of arteries causes death of the tissue to which the artery is supplying.
During the procedure, a catheter is inserted from the artery present in either the hip, thigh, knee, or leg. A special contrast dye is then injected which highlights the blood vessels of the legs. Once the location of narrowing or blockade is identified, the catheter is removed and a small balloon that is deflated on the end is inserted. The balloon is then guided inside the blockage and inflated so as to push the plaque flat against the wall of the blood vessel or artery. At this time, a small, mesh tube called stent may be inserted into the artery to help keep it open, and to ensure the smooth, continuous flow of blood.
After the procedure, you may be kept under observation for a day or so.
