Lumbar Disc herniation :

Lumbar disc herniation is an injury to the intervertebral disc in between two lumbar vertebrae which is caused by an external strain or trauma and result in lower back pain etc., It occurs when the soft gel like centre of the spinal disc bulges out through a tear in the outer, tougher layer , putting pressure on the near by nerves causing various symptoms like lower back pain, buttock or pain in the leg (sciatica), numbness or tingling in the legs or feet, decreased reflexes, difficulty in walking , standing in some cases is seen.

Most common presentation is lower back pain after normal daily activities that subsides with lying down . Complete medical history, history of any previous trauma, physical examination for nerve involvement and imaging tests like X-ray, CT, MRI and neurological examination is done to diagnose the lumbar disc herniation. Management is specific to each case and as directed by the physician that includes conservative like pain management, physical therapy, rest , exercise, ergonomics, surgical interventions like discectomy/microdiscectomy may be done if there is severe nerve involvement.
