When a woman is more than 20 weeks pregnant, her blood pressure may increase to 140/90 or more. The development of such high blood pressure during the second half of pregnancy is called hypertension in pregnancy. It is also known as gestational hypertension. Women who develop gestational hypertension don't always experience symptoms, which is why they must go for check-ups regularly. Some women may experience headaches, swelling, vision changes and reduced urination due to gestational hypertension. Hypertension in pregnancy can reduce the blood flow to the placenta. This can lead to premature birth, stillbirth and low birth weight. But it's not all bad news. Women whose hypertension is detected early in the pregnancy usually give birth to healthy babies. Hypertension is usually treated with medication that decreases the blood pressure.
