HOARSENESSS :

Hoarseness is a rough,strained and harsh voice that may be associated with pain and discomfort in the throat due to vocal cord irritation or injury. It can an acute hoarseness which occurs suddenly that usually resolves within a few days or may become persistent and cause chronic hoarseness lasting for more than 2 weeks. Hoarseness can occur due to overuse of voice seen in singers ,teachers,sales people, smoking,GERD, upper respiratory tract infections,laryngitis (inflammation of vocal cords), vocal cord polyps, nodules, cysts etc. Chronic hoarseness should be examined by an ENT surgeon and the underlying cause should be diagnosed and treated. Management of hoarseness includes vocal rest ,medications to treat conditions like acid reflux, cessation of smoking, hydration and surgical intervention if necessary.
