Endophthalmitis :
Endophthalmitis is a bacterial or fungal infection of the eye characterized by inflammation of the eye and needs immediate treatment. The warning signs of endophthalmitis are red eyes, significant eye pain, loss of vision, sensitivity to bright light, swollen eyelids, and watery eyes. Endophthalmitis occurs due to eye surgery, injections into the eye, industrial or motor vehicle accidents, playing contact sports and the spread of bacterial and fungal infections through dental work, receiving intravenous drugs, having sepsis or pneumonia, surgical procedures anywhere in the body, when a person has any skin ulcer and due to a urinary tract infection. Endophthalmitis is diagnosed by taking a complete eye exam, blood and urine investigation and by performing ocular ultrasound. This condition is treated by prescribing medications, eye drops or injections and in severe cases by a surgery called vitrectomy to remove infectious material from the eye.
