Cervical rib :

A cervical rib is called as an extra rib in humans. It is typically defined as an congenital anomaly and occurs approximately in 0.5% of the population. Cervical ribs can be unilateral or bilateral and can also vary in shape and size. This condition can be identified clinically when this extra rib or cervical rib causes compression of the nearby nerves exclusively the branchial plexus which is network of the nerves that controls muscles of the arm, shoulder and hand.

As a result of this compression the affected individual experience symptoms such as pain, numbness, weakness, tingling in the upper limb. Management typically depends on the severity of the symptoms and may involve conservative treatment such as physical therapy and in more severe cases surgical intervention may be necessary which involves the removal of the cervical rib in order to relieve the compression of the affected structures.
