Cervical Disc Herniation :

Cervical disc herniation occurs when one of the discs in the cervical spine ruptures or protrudes due to the compression of the nerves . This condition results from degeneration due to aging or trauma. Herniated disc can cause pain , numbness, weakness radiating from the neck to the shoulders , arms and hands , shoulder pain, leg pain, depending on the nerves which are affected or damaged. Symptoms often include stiffness of the neck, reduced range of motion, tingling sensations in the upper extremities .

Risk factors include excess body weight, genetics, smoking , lack of excercise, etc. Diagnosis involves physical examination, MRI, CT Scan to assess extent and location of herniation. Treatment options include conservative treatments like physical therapy, anti inflammatory conditions and corticosteroid injections . In severe cases , surgical intervention is necessary. Surgical procedures like discectomy , spinal fusion are used to repair herniated disc and thereby releive the pressure on the nerves that lead to improved function.
