Abnormal gait :
Gait refers to a normal way of walking and any deviation from the normal pattern is referred as abnormal gait. Abnormal gait can occur due to pathology in any system like conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system like muscle weakness due to myopathies, muscle dystrophies, arthritis , neurological conditions like brain and spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, stroke, Parkinson's disease, alcohol intoxication and cardiovascular disease like peripheral artery disease and other conditions like vision or balance problems, dementia, trauma like fractures, sprains,congenital hip defects, infections etc,. The person having abnormal gait like spatic gait, steppage gait, waddling gait etc,. often face difficulty in daily activities due to the abnormal postures or alignment, unsteady walking ,poor balance or coordination and increased risk of falls.Management of the abnormal gait is by diagnosing and treating the the underlying cause and other supportive care like physical therapy, improve the flexibility and strength of the weak muscles, gait training and using assistive devices like braces and surgical intervention if necessary.
