Peripheral Aneurysm :
An enlarged area in the arteries of the lower extremities is called a peripheral aneurysm. The most common site of peripheral aneurysm is the popliteal artery, which is present at the back of the knee. Symptoms of peripheral aneurysm include pain in the leg even on rest or exertion, numbness, radiating pain in the legs, and in some cases, it can also be seen as gangrene. Some of the causes for peripheral aneurysms include atherosclerosis, uncontrolled blood sugar, uncontrolled blood pressure, a strong family history, an unhealthy lifestyle that includes smoking, or even an underlying disease like peripheral vascular disease and trauma. Diagnosis is made by physical examination, basic blood investigations, ultrasound, CT, MRI, and angiogram. The wait-and-watch method is followed in most cases, as all aneurysms might not require treatment. However patients might be advised endovascular repair, ligation and open surgery if the peripheral aneurysms become a life threatning complication. Medications such as beta blockers and statins might also be advised along with lifestyle modifications.
